Design Technology

Moor Park is very lucky to have a spacious purpose-built Design Technology Department.  From Year Three onwards pupils have a double DT lesson timetabled each week as well as the opportunity of coming and enjoying the workshop during activity time.  By Year Eight, pupils are able to choose and execute projects of their own choice - within reason!

In short, Design Technology aims:

• to develop imaginative thinking in children and to enable them to talk about what they like and dislike when designing and making;

• to enable children to talk about how things work, and to draw and model their ideas;

• to encourage children to select appropriate tools and techniques for making a product, whilst following safe procedures;

• to explore attitudes towards the made world and how we live and work within it

• to develop an understanding of technological processes, products, and their manufacture, and their contribution to our society;

• To have fun experimenting with the above!

Design and Technology forms part of the school curriculum policy to provide a broad and balanced education for all children.  Design and Technology is a foundation subject in the National Curriculum. Moor Park uses this outline together with the expectations of senior schools to shape our scheme of work as the basis for its curriculum planning in design and technology.   

We have adapted the national scheme to the local circumstances of our school in that we use the local environment as the starting point for some aspects of our work.  Environmentally-friendly design is very fashionable and we have our own ‘Tree House’ to inspire us as well as local eco-entrepreneurs among our parents.  We hope to make Moor Park’s DT Department one of the best Prep School DT Departments in the country.
