Learning Support

Our Learning Support Department was established in 1991.  We aim to assist pupils of all ages and abilities to fulfil their potential during their time at Moor Park.

The Department is staffed by fully-qualified special needs teachers, and the Head of Department, Alexandra Moseley, is a full-time member of staff.    We help children with a wide variety of special needs, across the whole ability spectrum. The Department aims to offer friendly and structured support in a relaxed atmosphere, where children can:
•    Grow in confidence and self-esteem.
•    Follow structured programmes to address their difficulties.
•    Learn to “have a go” and risk making mistakes.
•    Take advantage of multisensory techniques, using games, IT, tactile and visual aids.
•    Learn to value their strengths and gradually take control of their learning.

All pupils in years 1 & 2 are screened for literacy development, and older pupils on arrival at the school.  If problems are noticed, the child’s needs will be discussed with parents, and a plan of action will be drawn up.  The degree of help we offer is tailored to the needs of individual children, and progress is reviewed regularly. 

The class teacher is the first person to offer assistance, with differentiated work and specific targets to aim for, in consultation with the Head of Learning Support.  Pupils in years 6-8 have a tutor who fulfils this role.  If children require more intensive support, they may be withdrawn for up to three 35-minute periods per week for one-to-one help in the Learning Support Department; there is an additional charge for these individual sessions.  All decisions regarding support time are taken in consultation with parents and pupils, so that, for example, a talented artist would never miss an art lesson to receive learning support.
