Modern Languages are an integral part of the curriculum at Moor Park. We always have a group of Spanish children staying with us for either a term or a year, and our pupils are therefore exposed to other languages and realise how important it is to learn at least one other foreign language. We are also lucky to have in school a small group of children who are bilingual in French and English. French is considered a core subject at Moor Park.

Years 1 to 4

French is introduced in Year 1 and 2 with one thirty minute lesson every week. Children learn their first words through songs and games using the Skoldo elementary book and CD-Rom.
Years 3 and 4 have three lessons a week - they use Skoldo books 1 and 2. These books reinforce the basic vocabulary while introducing grammar awareness with an element of fun. The French teaching in the lower school is undertaken by Mr Martin and Mr Squire.

Years 5 to 8

As we usually have new children joining us in Years 4 or 5, we start again from scratch in Year 5, in order to give children who have not been exposed to the same amount of French the chance to catch up with their peers. It is also a good opportunity to consolidate what has been learnt during the previous years. Year 5 marks the start of the Common Entrance syllabus.

At Moor Park we believe that in order to learn a language you need to understand how it works. Grammar is a central part of the course- we use the textbook - 'So you really want to learn French' by Nigel Pearce- a clearly structured book with a strong emphasis on grammar, but still with an element of fun. In year 8 we insist on consolidation of vocabulary and grammar rules and exam preparation with regular listening and reading tests, speaking and writing practise. Mr Jean-Michel Collin, Head of Department, is responsible for teaching Years 5 to 8. Most of the French teaching takes place in the French room, a brand new classroom equipped with an interactive whiteboard, a DVD player and an internet connection.

Year 7 trip to France

At the end of the Summer term, Year 7 go to France for a week. We stay in a gite in the Mayenne region. Different visits are organised: visit to Roman ruins in Jublains, Lactopole in Laval, the American military cemetery in St James, Le Mont Saint-Michel, le Memorial de Caen and Pontmain, a small village with a beautiful church erected in memory of the Virgin Mary's apparition in 1871. We also have plenty of fun with a visit to le Jardin Aquatique in Evron and to a Fun Parc, l'Ange Michel. It is a great opportunity for the chidren to discover another culture and to use what they have been learning in the classroom. It is also a very good way for Year 7 to experience living together for a week and create strong links before embarking on their final year
in school.
