Year 2 (6 to 7 years)

The Year 2 classrooms are situated next to the Year One classrooms.  Children move on from Year One to Year Two in the September following their sixth birthday and attend five days a week. As the children enter Year Two they are given more independence and encouraged to take responsibility for their behaviour and actions towards others. We have a motto in Year Two – Fair and Friendly – which encompasses their attitudes to each other as well as their relationships with adults.

The children thoroughly enjoy the opportunity to study science, history and geography as discreet subjects. Ludlow Museum bring in artefacts and photographs to support the study of Toys and Florence Nightingale. The children also enjoy trips to Ludlow Castle and Blist Hill. A magical day is experienced when children and teachers alike dress up as Victorians for a school day.

The opportunity to undertake experiments and tests using magnets and electricity are great fun. The topic of ‘Forces’ involves the children making and testing gravity sledges and marble runs which develops their evaluative skills.

The quality of art work is amazing. Colour, pattern and form make Year Two a vibrant classroom which displays a variety of work from comfy cushions, to scary sea monsters and calendars using Kadinsky ‘concentric circles’ as inspiration. Children also have the opportunity to work with the art teacher to produce rolled clay vases. They also visit the DT room to make bird tables, bird feeders and bird boxes, developing skills previously learnt. The beautiful grounds are frequently used and are a source of inspiration when studying art, geography and science. French conversation continues to be stimulating and children are beginning to read and write ‘en francais’!

The children continue to enjoy a broad curriculum as well as having the opportunity to experience ballet, tennis coaching and music lessons. They are also able to become Beaver Scouts  which meet every Tuesday at 4.30pm. This introduces the children to the world of scouting which they can continue out of school as the get older. In the summer term, the children have the opportunity to participate in further after school activities in preparation for a longer day in Year Three.
