If your child has been prescribed a medicine by a GP or other health professional that must be taken during school hours, we are happy to administer it on your behalf. A log is kept of all medicines given to pupils. Please note that legally we can only administer prescribed medications under the following circumstances:
1) You have completed a Parental Consent form specific for that medication.
Parental Medicine Consent Form
2) The medicine is in the original, unaltered dispensed container.
3) The medicine is in date and has your child’s name on it. In cases where the administration of prescription medicines requires technical or medical knowledge beyond our remit, the Head will arrange specialised training from an external health care professional.
If you wish your child to be given an over-the-counter medicine that is not already stocked in the Medical Room, we will do so provided that the Head is in agreement with the arrangement; however, as with prescribed medicines, we can only legally administer under the following circumstances:
1) You have completed a Parental Consent form specific for that medication, on the link above.
2) The medicine is in the original, unaltered dispensed container.
3) The medicine is in date and has your child’s name on it. A log is kept of all medicines given to pupils.
Medicines will be stored in the Medical Room in strict accordance with product instructions and in the original container in which dispensed. All medicines are kept in a locked cupboard in the Medical Room. Staff will ensure that a specific medicine for a child is stored in the supplied container, clearly labelled with the name of the child, the name and dose of the medicine and the frequency of administration. Some medicines require refrigeration and they will be stored in the refrigerator in the Medical Room office.
All emergency medicines such as asthma inhalers and adrenaline pens will be readily available, clearly marked and available at all times.
